Directional reflectance of light from landscapes on a long transect in Australia – forest to desert

The reflectance of land and vegetation observed in satellite imagery depends on sun and viewing geometry. This bidirectional reflectance requires correction for monitoring changes in vegetation cover and condition. We used a digital camera mounted in a light aircraft, and fitted with a fisheye lens, to measure directional reflectance of a diverse range of landscapes along a long transect in Australia — between Brisbane and the Simpson desert. All, except one, of the measured directional reflectances were able to be characterized accurately (adjusted r2 > 0.95) by the product of two analytical functions. The first, , which represents volume scattering, is a function of illumination and viewing zenith angles, , and has one parameter :The second, , which represents geometric scattering from a surface with sunlit and shaded elements, is a function of phase angle, , and has three parameters, , , and :where is reference reflectance. For ease of parameterizing a bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) for standardizing satellite imagery, the four-parameter BRDF function may be simplified to two parameters, , and , with only a small reduction in accuracy. The successful characterization of directional reflectance of a diverse range of landscapes, with a product of two simple functions, suggests that multiplicative BRDF functions would be useful for radiometric correction of satellite imagery over large areas. However, overfitting should be avoided to achieve robustness by using few parameters.

Utilising LANDHYPERNET data products over a deciduous broadleaf forest to validate Sentinel-2 and Landsat surface reflectance products

This paper demonstrates the use of a novel, autonomous hyperspectral surface reflectance data collected at Wytham Woods, United Kingdom (WWUK) as part of the LANDHYPERNET network for the validation of multispectral data from Sentinel-2, Landsat 8 and Landsat 9. The deployment of the HYPSTAR instrument at the site and the corresponding quality control of the data products is described. In addition, a methodology based upon metrological principles is outlined showing the propagation of uncertainties from the LANDHYPERNET and satellite data products to enable conformity testing of the satellite products using the satellite mission requirements. A total of 9 matchups are found for satellite validation at the site, where there is a cloud-free satellite scene and a corresponding LANDHYPERNET sequence, which has passed all quality checks, within two hours of the overpass. An analysis of the impact of the spatial variability of the site is presented and can account for up to 40% of the uncertainty associated with the in-situ surface reflectance data. There is no systematic bias in the Bottom-Of-Atmosphere reflectance data obtained from the LANDHYPERNET data in comparison to the satellite data. In the best case, differences of less than 2% are found for certain spectral bands. However, in the worst cases, relatively large differences are found which exceed 100%, this is affected by the relatively low reflectance values found in the visible bands. These differences could be caused by the spatial and temporal mismatch between the in-situ and satellite measurement, or due to shadowing caused by the flux tower. Further data quality control and assurance is needed to best choose data sets suitable for satellite validation. Incorporating a Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function model into the processing chain for the forest canopy is recommended. Overall, although there are areas to further characterise, the site provides a useful benchmark for which to develop techniques for validation of satellite surface reflectance products over a challenging environment.

Polarized Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function Matrix Derived from Two-Scale Roughness Theory and Its Applications in Active Remote Sensing

A polarized bidirectional reflectance distribution function (pBRDF) matrix was developed based on the two-scale roughness theory to provide consistent simulations of fully polarized microwave emission and scattering, required for the ocean–atmosphere-coupled radiative transfer model. In this study, the potential of the two-scale pBRDF matrix was explored for simulating ocean full-polarization backscattering and bistatic-scattering normalized radar cross sections (NRCSs). Comprehensive numerical simulations of the two-scale pBRDF matrix across the L-, C-, X-, and Ku-bands were carried out, and the simulations were compared with experimental data, classical electromagnetic, and GMFs. The results show that the two-scale pBRDF matrix demonstrates reasonable dependencies on ocean surface wind speeds, relative wind direction (RWD), geometries, and frequencies and has a reliable accuracy in general. In addition, the two-scale pBRDF matrix simulations were compared with the observations from the advanced scatterometer (ASCAT) onboard MetOP-C satellites, with a correlation coefficient of 0.9634 and a root mean square error (RMSE) of 2.5083 dB. In the bistatic case, the two-scale pBRDF matrix simulations were compared with Cyclone Global Navigation Satellite System (CYGNSS) observations, demonstrating a good correlation coefficient of 0.8480 and an RMSE of 1.2859 dB. In both cases, the two-scale pBRDF matrix produced fairly good simulations at medium-to-high wind speeds. The relatively large differences at low wind speeds (<5 m/s) were due probably to the swell effects. This study proves that the two-scale pBRDF matrix is suitable for the applications of multiple types of active instruments and can consistently simulate the ocean surface passive and active signals.

First retrieval of daily 160 m aerosol optical depth over urban areas using Gaofen-1/6 synergistic observations: Algorithm development and validation

The satellite-based aerosol optical depth (AOD), which can provide continuous spatial observations of aerosol loadings, is widely adopted to estimate atmospheric environmental quality and evaluate its risk for human health. However, current satellite-retrieved AOD products characterized by a comparatively coarse spatial resolution (≥1 km) can hardly analyze the structure of atmospheric pollution or its correlation with urban landscapes over populated urban areas. Existed studies have tried to address this deficiency by retrieving high-resolution AOD using Landsat images, whose long revisit period (16 days nominally), however, largely limits its applications related to urban air pollution research. To achieve both high spatial resolution and expected revisit period from satellite observation, in this study, a comprehensive AOD retrieval framework is developed for Wide-Field-of-View (WFV) satellite sensors to yield a daily AOD dataset over urban areas with 160 m spatial resolution, based on the Gaofen-1 and Gaofen-6 synergistic observations. To address the crucial challenge that the high spatial resolution and complex urban landscape both contribute a dramatic variation of land surface bidirectional reflectance, a Simulated-Annealing-coupled Semiempirical Modified Rahman-Pinty-Verstraete (SAS-MRPV) scheme is proposed to model and estimate the land surface reflectance (LSR) in the AOD retrieval framework, where the SAS-MRPV scheme is implemented using simulated annealing iteration initialized by the bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) products from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) as a priori knowledge. The validation results demonstrate that the Gaofen WFV AOD retrievals exhibit good agreement with the ground-based AErosol RObotic NETwork (AERONET) and SONET (Sun-sky radiometer Observation NETwork) AOD, demonstrating the correlation coefficient and the expected error (EE)±(0.05 + 0.15AODAERONET/SONET) ratio respectively reaching up to 0.97 and over 80 %, and only slight bias fluctuations are found under different land cover types, aerosol loading, and seasonal conditions. Moreover, the validation results of Gaofen WFV AOD retrievals, with LSR estimated based on the SAS-MRPV scheme, the MODIS BRDF Products, and the Minimum Reflectance Technique (MRT) method, demonstrate better accuracy and completeness of AOD retrievals using the SAS-MPRV scheme over both natural and impervious land surfaces, indicating the stability and reliability of proposed SAS-MRPV LSR determination scheme in WFV AOD retrieval. In addition to that, the error analyses and quality control results demonstrate that the SAS-MRPV scheme is effective and necessary to guarantee the reliability and accuracy of land surface bidirectional reflectance estimation by identifying and excluding the land surface pixels unsuitable for LSR modeling, which mitigates the uncertainty and yield better accuracy in the final WFV AOD products. Furthermore, the inter-comparison between WFV-derived AOD against the operational MODIS Deep Blue (10 km), Dark Target (3 km), and Multi-Angle Implementation of Atmospheric Correction (MAIAC, 1 km) AOD products demonstrates that the 160 m WFV AOD retrievals, on the basis of obtaining similar aerosol overall descriptions as MODIS AOD retrievals, possess the capability to characterize the spatial distribution of atmospheric pollution at a finer scale with smoother variation under both clean and polluted conditions. With outstanding accuracy and reliable performance, the developed comprehensive high-resolution AOD retrieval framework exhibits substantial potential for operational AOD retrieval of Gaofen WFV satellite observations, which could be directly applied to other urban areas supporting further studies related to air pollution emission management and health risk assessment at extra-fine spatial scale.

Empirical BRDF model for goniochromatic materials and soft proofing with reflective inks.

The commonly used analytic bidirectional reflectance distribution functions (BRDFs) do not model goniochromatism, that is, angle-dependent material color. The material color is usually defined by a diffuse reflectance spectrum or RGB vector and a specular part based on a spectral complex index of refraction. Extension of the commonly used BRDFs based on wave theory can help model goniochromatism, but this comes at the cost of significant added model complexity. We measured the goniochromatism of structual color pigments used for additive color printing and found that we can fit the observed spectral angular dependence of the bidirectional reflectance using a simple modification of the standard microfacet BRDF model. All we need to describe the goniochromatism is an empirically-based spectral parameter, which we use in our model together with a specular reflectance spectrum instead of the spectral complex index of refraction. We demonstrate the ability of our model to fit the measured reflectance of red, green, and blue commercial structural color pigments. Our BRDF model enables straightforward implementation of a shader for interactive preview of 3D objects with printed spatially and angularly varying texture.

An improved BRDF hotspot model and its use in VLIDORT for studying the impact of atmospheric scattering on hotspot directional signatures in the atmosphere

Abstract. The term “hotspot” refers to the sharp increase in the reflectance occurring when incident (solar) and reflected (viewing) directions almost coincide in the backscatter direction. The accurate simulation of hotspot directional signatures is important for many remote sensing applications. The RossThick–LiSparse–Reciprocal (RTLSR) bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) model is widely used in radiative transfer simulations, and the hotspot model mostly used is from Maignan–Bréon, but it typically requires large values of numerical quadrature and Fourier expansion terms in order to represent the hotspot accurately for its use coupled with atmospheric radiative transfer modeling (RTM). In this paper, we have developed a modified version based on the Maignan–Bréon's hotspot BRDF model that converges much faster numerically, making it more practical for use in the RTMs that require Fourier expansion of BRDF to simulate the top-of-atmosphere (TOA) hotspot signatures, such as in the RTM models using the Doubling–Adding or discrete ordinate method. Using the vector linearized discrete ordinate radiative transfer model (VLIDORT), we found that reasonable TOA–hotspot accuracy can be obtained with just 23 Fourier terms for clear atmosphere and 63 Fourier terms for atmosphere with aerosol scattering. In order to study the impact of molecular and aerosol scattering on hotspot signatures, we carried out a number of hotspot signature simulations with VLIDORT. We confirmed that (1) atmospheric molecule scattering and the existence of aerosol tend to smooth out the hotspot signature at the TOA and that (2) the hotspot signature at the TOA in the near-infrared is larger than in the visible, and its impact by surface reflectance is more significant. As the hotspot amplitude at the TOA with aerosol scattering included is smaller than that with molecular scattering only, the amplitude of hotspot signature at the surface is likely underestimated in the previous analysis based on the POLDER measurements, where the atmospheric correction was based on a single-scatter Rayleigh-only calculation. This modified model can calculate the amplitude of the hotspot accurately, and, as it agrees very well with the original RossThick model away from the hotspot region, this model can be simply used in conditions with and without hotspots. However, there are some differences in this modified model compared to the original Maignan–Bréon model for the scattering angles close to the hotspot point; thus, it may not be appropriate for those who need an exact representation of the hotspot angular signature.

A semi-analytical approach for estimating inland water inherent optical properties and chlorophyll a using airborne hyperspectral imagery

The inversion of inherent optical properties (IOPs) and chlorophyll a (Chla) is one of the key objectives in water color remote sensing, and hyperspectral remote sensing with rich spectral information makes precise inversion possible. In this study, we developed a semi-analytical estimation method for inland water IOPs based on the quasi-analytical algorithm (QAA). Considering the complex optical characteristics of inland waters, empirical parameter regional optimization was conducted. Furthermore, a dual-band joint inversion strategy and Gaussian function fitting method were utilized to optimize the solution processes for the backscattering coefficient of particles (bbp) and the absorption coefficient of phytoplankton pigments (aph), respectively. This approach overcomes the limitations of single-band bbp inversion in inland waters. In addition, it directly decomposes the absorption coefficient to obtain aph using a Gaussian function, which can reduce the intermediate steps and errors caused by indirect inversion. For Chla, we constructed a binary inversion model using aph(677) and remote sensing reflectance (Rrs), where the coefficient of determination (R2) exceeded 0.8. We also constructed an airborne hyperspectral image correction process, including vicarious calibration, atmospheric correction, and bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) correction, obtaining high-precision Rrs images. The ground models were successfully applied to the airborne hyperspectral images, mapping the spatial distribution of IOPs and Chla concentration in the study area. The experiments demonstrated that the proposed semi-analytical method using airborne hyperspectral imagery exhibits a good performance in terms of modeling accuracy and mapping analysis, and successfully applied to long-term monitoring using satellite hyperspectral images, highlighting the significant potential of hyperspectral remote sensing for high-precision monitoring of regional water bodies.

Relationship between topographic parameters and BRDF for tungsten surfaces in the visible spectrum

In metallic fusion devices, parasitic light originating from multiple reflections on the wall is a major problem for the interpretation of optical diagnostics. Strong stray light affects several optical diagnostics in ITER. One possibility to cope with this reflected light is to use photonic simulation, which can accurately predict the behavior of light within complex 3D geometry. A prerequisite is to get a good description of the reflection model, represented by the Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF), based on optical measurements of in-vessel materials. To avoid complicated measurements using goniophotometer to get the BRDF, one possibility is to link surface optical properties and topography characteristics, such as roughness measurements, for example, using the classical Bennett’s formula. Measurements were performed using two experimental goniophotometers to fully characterize the BRDF of tungsten samples with different roughness values. Surface topography was measured using a three-dimensional laser scanning confocal microscope. Several parameters were extracted from these measurements including the arithmetic average roughness (Ra), the root mean square roughness (RMS), the Surface Inclination Angle Distribution and furthermore its mean value δm and the power spectral density (PSD). The correlations of BRDF model parameters deduced from the measurements are compared with the previous topographic parameters. The initial results on several tungsten samples show that Ra, which is the usual measure of surface roughness, is not the most suitable metric to link with the reflection behavior of the surface. In contrast, the PSD and the surface inclination angle are interesting metrics for describing the reflected light.

Analysis and research on polarized radiation characteristics of ship targets at sea

The traditional ship infrared detection method cannot solve the edge details when the ship target interacts flexibly with the sea surface background. Polarization detection technology has gradually become an important research direction for high-precision detection of marine targets because of its advantages of acquiring the intrinsic characteristics of targets. This paper selects the typical part panels and scaled models of ships as experimental research object, focusing on the analysis of the polarized radiation characteristics of marine ship targets. Starting from the principle of polarization detection, we extended the application of the bidirectional polarization reflection distribution function that can obtain the polarization spectral characteristics of the target. According to the principle of time-sharing polarization detection, we designed a simulation experiment scheme for the polarization characteristics of the typical parts of the ship and the overall model related to the sea surface background. Finally, we implemented the measurement experiment of multi-angle polarization characteristics in the field and performed data analysis. The results show that: (1) The polarization reflectivity and polarization degree of the typical parts of the ship tend to be consistent with the changes of the observation geometric conditions, both increase with the increase of the observation zenith angle, and the forward scattering area is larger than the back scattering area. (2) The observation direction has a great influence on the overall detection results of the ship. When using the 30°zenith angle of the forward scattering area of the main plane for observation, the contrast between the ship and the water body is obvious, and it is easy to detect the ship.

Optical and Electromechanical Design and Implementation of an Advanced Multispectral Device to Capture Material Appearance.

The application of materials with changing visual properties with lighting and observation directions has found broad utility across diverse industries, from architecture and fashion to automotive and film production. The expanding array of applications and appearance reproduction requirements emphasizes the critical role of material appearance measurement and surface characterization. Such measurements offer twofold benefits in soft proofing and product quality control, reducing errors and material waste while providing objective quality assessment. Some image-based setups have been proposed to capture the appearance of material surfaces with spatial variations in visual properties in terms of Spatially Varying Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Functions (SVBRDF) and Bidirectional Texture Functions (BTF). However, comprehensive exploration of optical design concerning spectral channels and per-pixel incident-reflection direction calculations, along with measurement validation, remains an unexplored domain within these systems. Therefore, we developed a novel advanced multispectral image-based device designed to measure SVBRDF and BTF, addressing these gaps in the existing literature. Central to this device is a novel rotation table as sample holder and passive multispectral imaging. In this paper, we present our compact multispectral image-based appearance measurement device, detailing its design, assembly, and optical considerations. Preliminary measurements showcase the device's potential in capturing angular and spectral data, promising valuable insights into material appearance properties.

Polarized representation for depolarization-dominant materials.

The light-matter interactions which occur in common indoor environments are strongly depolarizing, but the relatively small polarization attributes can be informative. This information is used in applications such as physics-based rendering and shape-from-polarization. Look-up table polarized bidirectional reflectance distribution functions (pBRDFs) for indoor materials are available, but closed-form representations are advantageous for their ease of use in both forward and inverse problems. First-surface Fresnel reflection, diffuse partial polarization, and ideal depolarization are popular terms used in closed-form pBRDF representations. The relative contributions of these terms are highly dependent on material, albedo/wavelength, and scattering geometry. Complicating matters further, current pBRDF representations incoherently combine Mueller matrices (MM) for Fresnel and polarized diffuse terms which couples into depolarization. In this work, a pBRDF representation is introduced where first-surface Fresnel reflection and diffuse polarization are coherently combined using Jones calculus to avoid affecting depolarization. The first-surface and diffuse reflection terms are combined using an analytic function which takes as input the scattering geometry as well as geometry-independent material parameters. Agreement with wide-field-of-view polarimetric measurements is demonstrated using the new pBRDF which has only six physically meaningful parameters: the scalar-valued depolarization parameter and average reflectance which are geometry-dependent and four geometry-independent material constants. In general, depolarization is described by nine parameters but a triply-degenerate (TD) model simplifies depolarization to a single parameter. To test this pBRDF representation, the material constants for a red 3D printed sphere are assumed and the geometry-dependent depolarization parameter is estimated from linear Stokes images. The geometry-averaged error of the depolarization parameter is 4.2% at 662 nm (high albedo) and 11.7% at 451 nm (low albedo). The error is inversely proportional to albedo and depolarization, so the TD-MM model is considered appropriate for depolarization-dominant materials. The robustness of the pBRDF representation is also demonstrated by comparing measured and extrapolated Mueller images of a Stanford bunny of the same red 3D printing material. The comparison is performed by using Mueller calculus to simulate polarimetric measurements based on the measured and extrapolated data.

MSL goniospectrophotometer measurement model

Measurements of both hemispherical reflectance and the bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) are of interest to a wide range of industries including computer graphics, remote sensing, lighting design, and cosmetics. The scale of directional reflectance is often realised at national metrology institutes using goniospectrophotometers, and by integrating BRDF measurements made over the hemisphere, the scale of hemispherical reflectance can also be realised. This paper describes the measurement model for BRDF and hemispherical reflectance using the MSL goniospectrophotometer, which uses rotation stages to adjust the angle of the sample. The measurement model is applied to measurements of a white Spectralon sample and a white ceramic tile to demonstrate the performance of the instrument. The relative standard uncertainty in the BRDF of a white Spectralon sample at 550 nm is less than 0.1% for in-plane measurements, while the relative standard uncertainty in the hemispherical reflectance of a white Spectralon sample at 560 nm is 0.27%.

Development and comparison of primary facilities for traceable BSSRDF measurements

The bidirectional scattering-surface reflectance distribution function (BSSRDF) describes the radiance originated by the volume scattering and the surface reflectance of any position on the surface of a sample, when it is directionally irradiated at any other position. The present state of the technology for appearance rendering requires a more detailed physical description of translucent objects by traceable measurements of the BSSRDF. This work presents two primary facilities developed for traceable BSSRDF measurements by different measuring approaches. Their results on the same translucent samples have been compared and the achieved BSSRDF scale has been transferred to a commercial measuring system. This study highlights the problems of the different measuring instrument designs and provides the scientific community with more knowledge on the measurement of the BSSRDF, which will be crucial for future works on material appearance.

Radiometric Improvement of Spectral Indices Using Multispectral Lightweight Sensors Onboard UAVs

Close-range remote sensing techniques employing multispectral sensors on unoccupied aerial vehicles (UAVs) offer both advantages and drawbacks in comparison to traditional remote sensing using satellite-mounted sensors. Close-range remote sensing techniques have been increasingly used in the field of precision agriculture. Planning the flight, including optimal flight altitudes, can enhance both geometric and temporal resolution, facilitating on-demand flights and the selection of the most suitable time of day for various applications. However, the main drawbacks stem from the lower quality of the sensors being used compared to satellites. Close-range sensors can capture spectral responses of plants from multiple viewpoints, mitigating satellite remote sensing challenges, such as atmospheric interference, while intensifying issues such as bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) effects due to diverse observation angles and morphological variances associated with flight altitude. This paper introduces a methodology for achieving high-quality vegetation indices under varied observation conditions, enhancing reflectance by selectively utilizing well-geometry vegetation pixels, while considering factors such as hotspot, occultation, and BRDF effects. A non-parametric ANOVA analysis demonstrates significant statistical differences between the proposed methodology and the commercial photogrammetric software AgiSoft Metashape, in a case study of a vineyard in Fuente-Alamo (Albacete, Spain). The BRDF model is expected to substantially improve vegetation index calculations in comparison to the methodologies used in satellite remote sensing and those used in close-range remote sensing.

Retrieval of aerosol optical depth over the Arctic cryosphere during spring and summer using satellite observations

Abstract. The climate in the Arctic has warmed much more quickly in the last 2 to 3 decades than at the mid-latitudes, i.e., during the Arctic amplification (AA) period. Radiative forcing in the Arctic is influenced both directly and indirectly by aerosols. However, their observation from ground or airborne instruments is challenging, and thus measurements are sparse. In this study, total aerosol optical depth (AOD) is determined from top-of-atmosphere reflectance measurements by the Advanced Along-Track Scanning Radiometer (AATSR) on board ENVISAT over snow and ice in the Arctic using a retrieval called AEROSNOW for the period 2003 to 2011. AEROSNOW incorporates an existing aerosol retrieval algorithm with a cloud-masking algorithm, alongside a novel quality-flagging methodology specifically designed for implementation in the high Arctic region (≥ 72∘ N). We use the dual-viewing capability of the AATSR instrument to accurately determine the contribution of aerosol to the reflection at the top of the atmosphere for observations over the bright surfaces of the cryosphere in the Arctic. The AOD is retrieved assuming that the surface reflectance observed by the satellite can be well parameterized by a bidirectional snow reflectance distribution function (BRDF). The spatial distribution of AOD shows that high values in spring (March, April, May) and lower values in summer (June, July, August) are observed. The AEROSNOW AOD values are consistent with those from collocated Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) measurements, with no systematic bias found as a function of time. The AEROSNOW AOD in the high Arctic was validated by comparison with ground-based measurements at the PEARL, OPAL, Hornsund, and Thule stations. The AEROSNOW AOD value is less than 0.15 on average, and the linear regression of AEROSNOW and AERONET total AOD yields a slope of 0.98, a Pearson correlation coefficient of R=0.86, and a root mean square error (RMSE) of =0.01 for the monthly scale in both spring and summer. The AEROSNOW observation of increased AOD values over the high Arctic cryosphere during spring confirms clearly that Arctic haze events were well captured by this dataset. In addition, the AEROSNOW AOD results provide a novel and unique total AOD data product for the springtime and summertime from 2003 to 2011. These AOD values, retrieved from spaceborne observation, provide a unique insight into the high Arctic cryospheric region at high spatial resolution and temporal coverage.

Modeling the hotspot effect for vegetation canopies based on path length distribution

The hotspot effect, which refers to the increased reflectance in the solar direction, relies on the canopy structure. Numerous bi-directional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) models have been developed with careful attention to the hotspot effect. However, different assumptions may lead to very different shapes of BRDF, especially in the hotspot direction. With the development of high-resolution remote sensing satellites and three-dimensional (3D) mapping technologies, abundant 3D structural vegetation canopy information is available. However, traditional analytical models might not fully use these kinds of information. As a result, most of them are still very limited by their assumptions, such as the shape and spatial distribution of crowns. One BRDF model may do well only for one vegetation type and shows significant errors under other scenarios. We propose a new model named PATH_RT, which can model the hotspot effect at both the leaf and crown levels using the path length distribution (PLD). PLD can be easily obtained with the 3D information of the canopy at given remote sensing geometries. We validated the bi-directional reflectance factor (BRF) predicted by the PATH_RT model with the simulated scenes and field measurements which were produced by a 3D radiative transfer model LESS and UAV observations respectively. Compared to traditional analytical models SAILH, 4SAIL2, GORT, and 5SCALE, the PATH_RT model exhibits the highest accuracy, reducing the average RMSE by 86%, 66%, 52%, and 58% for the hotspot region respectively. PATH_RT accurately depicts the hotspot effects at the canopy and leaf levels and is highly efficient (99%, 75%, 86%, 99%, and 99% less time spent for one repeat run compared to LESS, SAILH, 4SAIL2, GORT, and 5SCALE models, respectively). Considering its high accuracy and efficiency, PATH_RT is expected to improve the accuracy and efficiency of remote sensing inversion.

Preliminary Retrieval and Validation of Aerosol Optical Depths from FY-4B Advanced Geostationary Radiation Imager Images

Fengyun-4B (FY-4B) is the latest Chinese next-generation geostationary meteorological satellite. The Advanced Geostationary Radiation Imager (AGRI) aboard FY-4B is equipped with 15 spectral bands, from visible to infrared, suitable for aerosol optical depth (AOD) retrieval. In this study, an overland AOD retrieval algorithm was developed for the FY-4B AGRI. Considering the large directional variation in the FY-4B AGRI reflectances, a bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) database was built, through which to estimate land surface reflectance/albedo. Seasonal aerosol models, based on four geographical regions in China, were developed between 2016 and 2022 using AERONET aerosol products, to improve their applicability to regional distribution differences and seasonal variations in aerosol types. AGRI AODs were retrieved using this new method over China from September 2022 to August 2023 and validated against ground-based measurements. The AGRI, Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI), and Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) official land aerosol products were also evaluated for comparison purposes. The results showed that the AGRI AOD retrievals were highly consistent with the AERONET AOD measurements, with a correlation coefficient (R) of 0.88, root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.14, and proportion that met an expected error (EE) of 65.04%. Intercomparisons between the AGRI AOD and other operational AOD products showed that the AGRI AOD retrievals achieved better performance results than the AGRI, AHI, and MODIS official AOD products. Moreover, the AGRI AOD retrievals showed high spatial integrity and stable performance at different times and regions, as well as under different aerosol loadings and characteristics. These results demonstrate the robustness of the new aerosol retrieval method and the potential of FY-4B AGRI measurements for the monitoring of aerosols with high accuracy and temporal resolutions.

Retrieving land surface reflectance anisotropy with Sentinel-3 observations and prior BRDF model constraints

Sentinel-3 supports governmental policies and European programmes such as the Copernicus Global Land Service with daily monitoring of the land surface by measuring the Earth's surface with its multi-band wide-swath visible and near-infrared radiometers. To fully exploit Sentinel-3 data sets, performing a correction of directional effects caused by the land surface reflectance anisotropy properties is mandatory. This correction requires first an estimation of the bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) to be properly achieved. The quality and robustness of global estimates of key land surface variables derived from space-borne sensors depend clearly on an accurate assessment of the spectral BRDF.Here, we present an algorithm aiming at harnessing the Sentinel-3's wide imaging swath to retrieve the land surface BRDF, approximating it via a kernel-driven semi-empirical model which can then be used to normalise the observations to a common Sun-sensor geometry. Our algorithm, named ReBeLS (Regularised BRDF inversion for Land Surface), uses a temporally regularised BRDF inversion approach and, together with prior knowledge of the land surface BRDF obtained from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) sensors, assimilates Sentinel-3 surface reflectance observations. We focus on the results derived from observations provided by the Sentinel-3 Ocean and Land Colour Instrument (OLCI) sensors; however, the algorithm can also be applied to reflectance observations acquired by the Sea and Land Surface Temperature Radiometer (SLSTR). The retrieved BRDF model parameters reproduce within uncertainties the directional signature as seen by the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) sensor. The generated Sentinel-3 normalised surface reflectance products are a significant advance compared with time series of directional surface reflectance and maximum value composite images, showing a statistically significant (p≪0.05) correlation (r>0.9) with VIIRS nadir BRDF-adjusted surface reflectance. Furthermore, the ReBeLS Sentinel-3 BRDF products offer enough flexibility to allow users to compute spectral surface albedos or to normalise surface reflectance to any Sun-sensor configuration.

Global 500 m seamless dataset (2000–2022) of land surface reflectance generated from MODIS products

Abstract. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) is widely utilized for retrieving land surface reflectance to reflect plant conditions, detect ecosystem phenology, monitor forest fires, and constrain terrestrial energy budgets. However, the state-of-the-art MODIS surface reflectance products suffer from temporal and spatial gaps due to atmospheric conditions (e.g. clouds and aerosols), limiting their use in ecological, agricultural, and environmental studies. Therefore, there is a need for reconstructing spatiotemporally seamless (i.e. gap-filled) surface reflectance data from MODIS products, which is difficult due to the intrinsic inconsistency of observations resulting from various sun/view geometry and the prolonged missing values resulting from polar night or heavy cloud coverage, especially in monsoon season. We built a framework for generating the global 500 m daily seamless data cubes (SDC500) based on MODIS surface reflectance dataset, which contains the generation of a land-cover-based a priori database, bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) correction, outlier detection, gap filling, and smoothing. The first global spatiotemporally seamless land surface reflectance at 500 m resolution was produced, covering the period from 2000 to 2022. Preliminary evaluation of the dataset at 12 sites worldwide with different land cover demonstrated its robust performance. The quantitative assessment shows that the SDC500 gap-filling results have a root-mean-square error (RMSE) of 0.0496 and a mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.0430. The SDC500 BRDF correction results showed an RMSE of 0.056 and a bias of −0.0085 when compared with MODIS nadir BRDF-adjusted reflectance (NBAR) products, indicating the acceptable accuracy of both products. From a temporal perspective, the SDC500 eliminates abnormal fluctuations while retaining the useful localized feature of rapid disturbances. From a spatial perspective, the SDC500 shows satisfactory spatial continuity. In conclusion, the SDC500 is a well-processed global daily surface reflectance product, which can serve as the fundamental input for large-scale ecological, agricultural, and environmental applications and quantitative remote sensing studies. Non-Lambertian snow surface reflection models for simulated top-of-the-atmosphere radiances in the NIR and SWIR wavelengths

Accurately modeling snow reflectance is one way to improve satellite observations in the high-latitude regions. Snow surfaces are known to be challenging for atmospheric retrievals in the short-wave infrared (SWIR) wavelength regime due to their low reflectance. For example, current algorithms for satellite-based remote sensing of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) do not take into account the unique reflective properties of snow surfaces. In this paper, we present a measurement-based snow surface reflectance model in the near-infrared (NIR; 755–775 nm) and SWIR (1590–1620 nm, 2040–2080 nm) bands used in remote sensing of atmospheric CO2. We study snow reflectance in detail using a novel atmospheric radiative transfer model (RTM) software and a measurement-based model for snow bi-directional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) to identify how the observations could be optimized in regards of observation geometry and wavelengths. The novel simulation software for NIR-SWIR atmospheric radiative transfer, Raysca, is presented and validated. Top-of-the-atmosphere radiance simulations show that forward-viewing geometries over snow-covered surfaces yield higher radiances than the traditional nadir-viewing geometries, which could indicate the preferability of forward-viewing observation modes in the retrieval of atmospheric CO2. Similarly, atmospheric observations in the 1.6 μm CO2 absorption band might be preferable to the 2.0 μm CO2 absorption band due to higher radiances in the 1.6 μm band.
